Week 6

Going into this week I did not know what to expect with the topic of Biotechnology as I was not familiar with what exactly it entailed. The use of biotechnology in art is something I never acknowledged as belonging in the art realm as well as its relation to the food industry through its uses of biotechnology. A topic that further intrigued me was the the question of whether or not artists have the same right as scientists to use biotechnology and should the limitations be more or less strict? Often times we view science as more righteous to deal with transgenics among other manipulations of living systems than art, however artists such as Joe Davis, Edwardo Cats, and Kathy High among others proved the relevance of biotechnology in art and discoveries beyond everyday science practices.

The Suspect Inversion Center founded by Paul Vanouse does a great job of combining art and relevant science technologies to recreate the DNA samples involved with historical court cases such as the OJ Simpson case. Establishments like these propel the public’s knowledge of this form of art as well as ways in which it can benefit society. Transmediale - 07.jpg
The relation of food and biotechnology in art was something I felt very relevant to modern times. With so much mass production of food and artificial ingredients added to our foods often we don’t realize exactly what our food is doing to our body’s systems. Morgan Spurlock touches on this in his experiment with McDonald’s in Super Size Me. In one specific scene it is proven that after 10 weeks McDonald’s fries stay preserved as if they were cooked the day prior which poses the question to the audience that what exactly is that doing to our insides? Over the years artists have been at the forefront of some major topics in our society when it comes to biotechnology and they have added a different perspective to the same knowledge. This week has opened my eyes to the wide range of what is considered art and the vast interest artists have in expressing their ideas and creativity.
