Week 4

This week’s topic on science and technologies affect on the human body gave me a deeper appreciation for this intersection of art and science. The fact that the combination of these two disciplines have saved people’s lives and transformed the way we see healthcare and our understanding of the human body and its functions is beyond fascinating to me. As stated by Professor Vesna, human dissection is the first time we see this intersection of art and science in regards to the human body. Through understanding the anatomical human body, artists are able to make their art more realistic and found that the human body was a piece of art as well.

The picture to the right is the work of Vesalius who has shaped modern human anatomy, and more namely the internal structures of the human body. The breakthroughs of this level of understanding has lead to inventions such as the X-ray, the technology of MRI, and continues to have an effect on less invasive medical procedures. Another notable author is Henry Gray who wrote Gray’s Anatomy in 1858 which was intended for medical consumption but leaked into the art field due to the beauty of the human body. We all are familiar with the popular show Grey’s Anatomy, but know it all makes sense as to where it got its name.

I found that Erwin Driessens & Maria Verstappen Breed’s website the most interesting when it came to connecting this topic to today’s intersection of art and science. Their piece on tickle robots I found the most interesting as I have never seen robots used in such a way as well as knew that there was actually a “tickle salon” that was established in 2002. Who knows, that could become the new fad.

I’m Jacqui Prober from Santa Maria, California in my first year here at UCLA. Growing up with a mother that is a school teacher and a father that is a physical therapist I was always introduced to the worlds of both art and science. Although I was aware of both disciplines, I could feel the divide that society has engrained between the two. Many people are under the belief that math and art are opposites to one another and that these two fields don’t cross in any way. This is in fact false because everyday in one way or another you witness art that was created using some form of math. The integration of mathematics in art has transformed the way art is today whether we recognize it or not. Especially in today’s world where technology is a such a big part of our culture, math and science are even more prevalent in our everyday intake of media. From the layout of my computer screen to the social media sites we visit numerous times a day, math is used in art. “The interaction between art and science offers an opportunity to make the scientific community and the public aware of the social and ethical implications of the scientific advances in neuroscience” (Frazetto). This quote from Neuroculture by Giovanni Freazetto and Suzanne Anker summarizes the topic for this week as well as focuses on science’s impact on society. I believe the societal implications that science and technology bring about are at the forefront of conversation in modern humanity and more respectively 1st world countries. With each advancement we become more and more reliant on that technology to get through our everyday lives.
